Counterpart International is currently seeking an Communication Officer for a 5-year USDA McGovern-Dole Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program which aims to reduce hunger and improve literacy and nutrition among school-age students, especially girls. With the support and under the supervision of the COP, the Communications Officer will develop external communication tools and materials to increase program visibility and positioning.  This is a full-time position based in Maputo, Mozambique. The applicant should be a Mozambique national or have the legal right to work/reside in Mozambique.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement communications strategies and work-plans;
  • Manage in-country communications in media outlets;
  • Maintain close contact and organize events with key local media (e.g. press conferences, press briefings);
  • Travel frequently to field projects to pro-actively and re-actively obtain and pitch resources;
  • Gather and prepare communication materials (photos, video footage, stories, quotes, program updates, reports, interviews) for input into the monthly, quarterly and yearly reports;
  • Manage swift approval at field level of communications material before publication;
  • Prepare, facilitate and accompany field visits of high profile visitors to document the visit;
  • Monitor and report on local media, flag significant articles, trends, news or reports of importance for Counterpart;
  • Supervise the production of and edit local communication tools and products (leaflets, brochures, posters, radio spots, articles, photos, videos);
  • Raise the awareness of the field team about how to communicate externally and maintain the reputation of Counterpart in dealings with staff and other key stakeholders;
  • Researching, preparing fact-checking, editing, and producing professional media and communications materials for various audiences and ensuring their timely dissemination;
  • Providing considered professional communications advice to representatives and other senior staff on an ongoing basis, and preparing communications workshops and training including for senior staff;
  • Creating high quality media and multimedia content for dissemination in country;
  • Coordinate closely with Headquarters Communications staff;
  • Produce strategic and general interest news and features content for dissemination to external audiences via Counterpart online channels;
  • Maintain an up to date database of journalists and media organizations, respond to media enquiries on deadline, and build dialogue with individual journalists, editors and news desks;
  • Assist field leadership team in developing tools and structures to pro-actively support the team in improving internal communication within the project (internal news, contributing to team meetings etc.;
  • Ensuring Counterpart visibility, reputation, and position in-country;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Degree in communication of related field;
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in media, communications, marketing, or fundraising;
  • Strong grasp of online social media tools and techniques;
  • Computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook;
  • Capable of managing a varied workload, and able to operate in complex but fascinating contexts;
  • Highly organized with a creative flair and a good attention to detail;
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to target different audiences and to tailor output accordingly;
  • Dynamic, passionate, and creative communicator.

Preferred

  • Training or experience in multi-media production and editing;
  • Strong sense of responsibility;
  • Analytical skills;
  • Good Judgment.
